Memory Care
FOOD FOR THE MIND
Memory care is geared for seniors or individuals with memory loss, Alzheimer’s, and other forms of dementia. These terms, in general, mean a decline in cognitive capabilities such as memory, language, or critical thinking skills that affects their day-to-day life. There are 11 distinct types of dementia, Alzheimer’s’ being the most prominent form of dementia affecting the geriatric population. The key to successful memory care is congruent through a strong interdisciplinary healthcare team to make the utmost impact in residents’ health and quality of life. Dementia and eating challenges tend to correlate as the disease progresses, leading to weight loss and increased risk of malnutrition.
NUTRITION BASED MEMORY CARE
Food and nutrition play a vital role in caring for residents with dementia. Here at Genuine Foods, we are committed to delivering health-building foods to hospitals, healthcare facilities, and senior living programs. We understand the ins and outs of a successful memory care program for individuals living with dementia. The first step is to understand the effects of dementia, such as the physiological changes, possible side effects of certain medications, swallowing and chewing difficulties, and behavior changes. For example, the physiological changes associated with dementia may lead to dehydration, decreased appetite or decline in sense of smell or taste, and the inability to focus. The next step is using the dining experience to enhance their current lifestyle to boost a sense of independence and continuity. This can include providing colorful tableware and distraction-free dining and offering a wide variety of foods that can be eaten by hand.
